Jean Tigana revealed after Sunday's draw with Leeds he has tried to sign an un-named striker on loan to cover for Steve Marlet.
Frenchman Marlet has been out of action for five weeks with a knee injury and has only made four starts for The Cottagers since his £11.5million switch from Lyon in August - prompting Tigana to look for cover elsewhere.
But Tigana confirmed that the hitman will return by the New Year, and commented: "I tried to get a striker on loan but it is very difficult, and anyway (Steve) Marlet should return by the end of this month."
Speaking about yesterday's goalless draw with Leeds, Tigana added: "We need more power when we're near their goal but this is the best defence in the country. They have only conceded eight goals.
"I am pleased with the way my team has progressed - but we need more. For the future I am very confident. Our confidence will improve even more if we could win a game by three or four goals."
