Edwin backs Barthez

Edwin van der Sar is backing Manchester United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez to come through his nightmare spell.

Van der Sar is one of the most experienced keepers in the world, having won the Champions League with Ajax and the Serie A title with Juventus. And he knows exactly what Barthez is going through, having suffered a similar but brief loss of form at Juve last year.

He said: "After 11 years in the game I understand what Fabien is feeling. It is a tough time for him and it will probably be a tough month.

"But I have spoken to Fabien before and I know he is a strong person. I'm sure he will come through it and be back to his best in the New Year. He just has to work hard and train hard and it will be fine."
