Ladies final preview

Friday 5 April 2002

Having being confirmed as champions in midweek Fulham Ladies turn their attentions back to the Cup this weekend as they take on Birmingham City in the AXA FA Premier League Cup final on Sunday.

It's part two in what could be a dream treble for the ladies team who are also through to the final of the FA Cup, after a 4-1 victory over Charlton last weekend.

Despite a distinguished playing career which has seen her win an Olympic gold at Sydney 2000, a Fulham victory on Sunday would remarkably give captain Marianne Pettersen her first ever cup winners medal at club level."It will be a really big event for me because if we win it means I can hold a Cup winners medal in my hand for the first time in club football," she said.

"I have two League championship medals from my time playing for Asker in the Norwegian League, and an Olympic medal, but I've never won a Cup so Sunday will be very special for me - and also for Fulham as it's the club's chance to win a major Cup final for the first time."

Fulham have already beaten Birmingham once this season, 5-0 in the fourth round of the FA Cup, but Pettersen is not underestimating Sunday's opponents.

"I'm sure that most people will see us as favorites but we will not be over confident and it is important we don't underestimate Birmingham."

Pettersen, who scored the winner in Fulham's 3-2 semi final win over Arsenal back in January, recently announced she will be returning to Norway at the end of the season to continue her education.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Fulham and I hope we can go on and win both cup competitions. That would be a great way for me to finish my time at Fulham."

If the Ladies are to win on then chances are that the Fulham captain, who has scored a staggering 78 goals this season, will have a major part to play.
