Premiership round-up

Saturday 20 April 2002

Fulham's excellent win against Leeds United at Elland Road all but confirmed the Whites' presence in next season's Premiership.

With many writing Fulham off beforehand, popular opinion suggested that a draw would be the most Fulham could achieve.

The win moves Fulham away from the danger zone and whilst Ipswich have to face Arsenal on Sunday, Blackburn did the Tractor Boys no favours by securing a 3-1 away at Middlesbrough.

That result leaves Ipswich three points behind Rovers but with a far worse goal difference.

Peter Reid's Sunderland are not yet out of the woods after they were soundly beaten by West Ham at Upton Park.

With Blackburn having three games in hand over the Black Cats, logic would dictate that Ipswich should be setting their sights on Sunderland.

Out of the teams above Ipswich, only the Black Cats have an inferior goal difference. With Derby County's relegation, the onus is now on Ipswich to avoid that final bottom-three place.

With Fulham's next opponents Bolton earning a creditable draw against Spurs, Tuesday night at the Cottage looks set for a tough encounter.

Saturday's results:

Bolton 1 Spurs 1
Chelsea 0 Man Utd 3
Leicester 2 A Villa 2
Liverpool 2 Derby 0
M'boro 1 Blackburn 3
Newcastle 3 Charlton 0
West Ham 3 Sund'land 0
Southampton 0 Everton 1
