Arsenal avoid Ladies

Wednesday 13 February 2002

Last season's finalists have avoided each other in the draw for this season's AXA F.A. Women's Cup semi-finals.

The two giants of the women's game - 2001 treble winners Arsenal and professional outfit Fulham - played out a tense, entertaining encounter in last season's final and the draw has paved the way for a possible re-run in this year's showpiece event..

Fulham, who beat Everton 4-0 in the quarter-finals last Sunday, are up against either Garswood Saints, Enfield or Charlton Athletic. The Garswood Saints v Enfield Fifth Round tie has been postponed for the last two weeks running and has been reversed, so Enfield will host the game this Sunday; the winners of that tie will play Charlton Athletic at home in the quarter-final match.

Doncaster Belles will be hoping to knock Arsenal out of the competition, when they host the holders in a quarter-final tie this Sunday, 17th February. The winners of that tie have been drawn away to the winners of the last remaining quarter-final tie - Tranmere Rovers v Oldham Curzon. Northern Division side Oldham claimed a scalp at the weekend by beating National Division side Southampton Saints 2-1 away and will be hoping to reach the last four and a glamour tie against either Belles or Arsenal.

The semi-finals of the competition will be held on Sunday March 31st, at venues to be decided with the Final being played at Selhurst Park on Bank Holiday Monday (6th May), kicking-off at 1pm.

The draw:

Fulham v Garswood Saints or Enfield or Charlton Athletic

Tranmere Rovers or Oldham Curzon v Doncaster Belles or Arsenal

Ties to be played Sunday 31st March 2002 (the week before the League Cup final against Birmingham at Wycombe FC- Sunday April 7)
