Boa's World Cup worry

Wednesday 27 February 2002

Fulham's Portuguese winger Luis Boa Morte has admitted that he's not too hopeful of being called up for Portugal's World Cup squad.

Having been blighted with injury this season, Boa Morte realised that he's going to have only an outside chance of being making Antonio Oliveira's summer squad, and is instead setting his sights on the European Championships.

"It will be difficult for me because I only came into the national side last March. I knew it would be a big challenge for me to get to the World Cup. At the moment my big target is Euro 2004 rather than the World Cup.

However, Boa Morte revealed that he hasn't totally given up all hope of making the trip to Japan.

"I'm no different to any other player. Of course I would like to be there, but if I don't make it into the squad I won't be disappointed. And if I do then I will be really happy. There are two months to go and a lot depends on how I do in the last weeks of the season.

"When you score goals you get noticed. If you score goals and show good form then you have a chance."
