Fulham Ladies 9 v 1 Newport County

Match Report by Carol Gale

Fulham Ladies took on Newport County in the league on Sunday. With the majority of the first team away in Germany taking part in a five-a-side tournament against some of the top ladies teams, Fulham Ladies was largely made up of players from the reserves and Centre of Excellence teams. This was an opportunity for those players to show they can compete at a higher lever, and indeed they did.

However, the game didn't start off too well for Fulham Ladies within the first minute they had conceded a penalty. But fortunately for Fulham, Emma Jones's resulting penalty kick hit the post and was cleared by the Fulham defence. Newport then had a shot, which just went wide. Fulham however hit back and Terri Warren had a couple of shots, which went narrowly wide.

The first half hour of the game was very tight, Fulham had chances but Newport were defending well and were hard to break down. But Fulham finally got the goal they thoroughly deserved. Warren sent in a good cross, which was knocked down by Daly and Karen Mears scored from close range.

However, straight from the re-start Fulham Ladies were caught napping and Newport's Jenna Hopkins got on to a cross and found the back of the net with a good header. A couple of minutes later, Fulham re-took the lead Mears found Warren with an excellent through ball and Warren made no mistake with her shot.

Fulham Ladies had a 2-1 lead at half time. The second half was all Fulham, straight from the kick off they were on the attack, Percival and the impressive Mears had efforts that went narrowly wide and Pettersen had a long-range effort that just went over the bar. They were rewarded in the 53rd minute with their third goal. The ball broke to Mears who went down the wing, played in good pass to Collins, who shot past the keeper. And then Fulham were awarded a free kick 40 yards out from goal, out on the left and Roxanne Bennett's free kick dipped over the goal-keeper. Kirsty Percival, who was also having an excellent game in mid-field, popped up with another long-range effort giving the Newport keeper no chance and made it 5-1.

Newport were under constant pressure and were restricted in any attacks they could put together. Within a minute Collins had added two more goals, showing excellent goal poaching instincts. Fulham Ladies seemed solid throughout and their attacking game with so many options and pace in attack made it hard work for Newport. Another goal was on the cards after Natasha Daly did some good work in midfield, left it for Warren, who let go an unstoppable shot past the keeper.

In the 68th minute Julie McCauley replaced Jo Wilson. Terri Warren scored an excellent solo goal, and was then replaced by Shareen Blackwood.

Fulham broke and Collins, whose run had begun from the half way line and was about to shoot, was brought down and the referee did not hesitate in awarding a penalty. Jemma Lindfield made no mistake from the spot.

Fulham Ladies won 9-1 and dominated the game, particularly in the second half, excellent performance throughout the team.
