Fulham Ladies 12 v 1 Bristol Rovers, LSE, Sunday March 3, 2002 at 2.00pm.
Match Report by Carol Gale
Fulham Ladies took to the field with many of their regular players on international duty. The defence hadn't played together before and included Sanchia Duncan whose normal position is as a forward.
Mears playing on the left wing was making some good runs and crosses another such run led to a corner. Once again up stepped Haugenes to put in another superb corner, headed on by Pettersen and Lynn Rebecca Mork scored from close range. Immediately from the re-start Fulham went 5-0 up, the ball was put through to Pettersen who shot past the keeper.
Due to Fulham's constant pressure the Rovers defence were making silly mistakes and conceded another goal following another corner by Haugenes, Kristy Moore was at the back post and scored a powerful header.
Bristol Rovers tightened up the defence for the resent of the first half and had a couple of attempts themselves, but the Fulham defence were restricting them to long-range efforts.
At the beginning of the second half there was a Fulham substitution, Davis replaced Lindfield. Rovers had their first real goal attempt, a well-taken shot by the number eight was well saved by Jody Smith, who was alert enough to get up and save a follow up shot as well.
Another substitution for Fulham in the 55th minute, Odiniyi was replaced due to injury, by Lyford.
It wasn't long before the Fulham strike force were in the groove again, an excellent defence splitting pass by Deena Rahman, saw Pettersen race on and shoot into the far corner of the net.
However Rovers responded, a lack of communication between the Fulham defenders, saw number 8 put through number 2, and she hit a good shot into the net. Rovers had been threatening to nick a goal since the beginning of the second half.
This seemed to spur Fulham on however and they responded strongly with Rahman, who made space and hit a powerful shot just outside the penalty box, a deserved goal for her all round play up front. Rovers then had to battle to keep the score two, there were a couple of goal line clearances.
Then Kristy Moore won a corner, once again Haugenes put in a good centre and Mork headed in unchallenged. In the 80th minute, after excellent passes between Rahman and Haugenes, there was Pettersen in the right place at the right time to shoot past the keeper - making her personal tally six goals.
Two further goals were yet to come, Mork who had a solid display in midfield, capped off her excellent performance with another tap-in to complete her hat trick.
And then just before the final whistle rather than supplying the crosses, Margunn Haugenes got on the end of a good pass by Lyford and fired her shot into the back of the net.
Fulham Ladies were expecting a far tougher match, but the reserves who stepped in for the regular players performed solidly, and the experience and quality of Pettersen and Haugenes, meant a comfortable win.
Manager Gaute Haugenes said after the game " I would like to thank Gary Mulcahey and the Reserve players for making up most of the squad. These young players coming through into the squad are definitely ones for the future and they had a really good game".
