Steed stars in win

Steed Malbranque was in action for France as they kicked off their participation in the European Under-21 Championship with a 2-0 victory over the Czech Republic.

The young star could well have netted in the 21st minute as he saw his curling free kick force an excellent save from the Czech Republic's custodian, Cech.

Malbranque's Fulham team-mate Sean Davis, also taking part in the tournament, is expected to take the field as David Platt's under-21 side take on Switzerland on Friday evening.

In other international action, Steve Finnan played in Ireland's disappointing 2-1 defeat at the hands of Nigeria on Thursday.
