Fulham Res 2 Coventry City Res 2
Martin Djetou made his first appearance in a Fulham shirt on Wednesday evening as the Whites struggled to a 2-2 draw against very tricky opposition in the shape of Coventry City.
In keeping with the corresponding fixture last season, Coventry started the match looking to stifle Fulham in midfield. That tactic looked to be reaping rewards after the Sky Blues broke clear on the left wing after only four minutes. But for an excellent goal line clearance from Kieran McAnespie, the visiting side could have taken the lead.
On nine minutes, Fulham opened the scoring through Calum Willock. Following a decent spell of pressure, debutante Martin Djetou floated a diagonal ball on to Willock's head. The young striker did well in placing his header far beyond Montgomery's despairing dive.
For a player who has been injured for the last few months, Djetou was looking far from rusty as some early, biting challenges demonstrated. After only a few minutes of play it was easy to see why the Frenchman has earned the 'enforcer' tag.
Despite going a goal down, Coventry were still defending in numbers and making it very difficult for Fulham to establish any sort of passing rhythm.
The visitors equalised on 32 minutes through Higgins after Fulham failed to clear a dangerous bouncing ball in the penalty area. With Hudson caught off balance, Higgins spun and placed his shot past Herrera.
The remainder of a fairly uninspiring first half saw Coventry's hard work cancelling out Fulham's guile.
The second half spluttered into life in the 55th minute when a sharp left wing attack from the Whites resulted in a narrowly wide effort on goal from Bjarne Goldbaek. From the ensuing corner Calum Willock got his second goal of the match after Coventry goalkeeper, Montgomery made a hash of the set piece.
With the ball about to descend into the melee of players waiting on the edge of the six-yard box following Montgomery's error, Willock leapt above the crowd and flicked the ball over the line. 2-1 Fulham.
Just after the hour mark, Djetou made way for Tom Davis after making a very favourable impression. Sitting in the defensive midfield position, Djetou showed some accomplished touches, intermingled with a number of rock hard challenges.
Just as the match looked to be settling down, the Sky Blues managed to snatch a spectacular equaliser, again courtesy of a defensive mix up.
With Coventry having one man over on the right side of Fulham's defence. The ball fell to Higgins, who volleyed an unstoppable shot just inside Herrera's left hand post from 25 yards.
