Leacock the Lion

Monday 30 September 2002

England Under-19 coach Stuart Baxter today unveiled his squad to take on Yugoslavia on October 10 and included young Fulham defender Dean Leacock.

Croydon born Dean, a third year scholar at Fulham's Academy, has been likened to Rio Ferdinand by Academy boss Steve Kean, and recently signed a two year professional contract with the club after impressing throughout his time in the Under 15s, Under 16s and reserves.

The talented defender also won a place on the first team bench for the first leg of Fulham's recent Intertoto Cup Final against Bologna.

Able to play in a right back position, as well as in the centre of defence, he is predominantly right footed but also has a useful left foot and extensive work on his technical knowledge over the last two years now means that Dean is, says Steve Kean, a very technically minded defender.

An expert at long diagonal passes the former England Under 18 international has adapted well to playing at right back and has played for the reserves in both positions.

Aggressive in his defending but "quiet and confident, without being boisterous," as Steve Kean put it, Dean certainly has a bright future ahead of him, for Club and country.
