Charlton 1-0 Fulham
Despite a battling performance from the holders it was Charlton Athletic who lifted the 2004 Premier League Cup as the Whites went down to a single Charlton goal in an evenly balanced and hard fought affair.
Fulham began the game kicking up the Underhill slope and for the first half an hour there was very little to separate the two sides but then a turning point - influential Charlton captain Casey Stoney limped off in what could have been a killer blow for the Addicks but within three minutes her substitute Emma Goss had scored the only goal of the game, heading home a cross from short range.
With the goal coming slightly against the run of play Fulham Ladies upped the tempo in an attempt to get back on level terms and the second half saw the holders apply much more pressure. However they were unable to breach the opposition defence, ably marshalled by Karen Hills, acting skipper for the injured Stoney, and Pauline Cope in goal. In the closing minutes of the game Cope saved well from a Rachel Yankey effort.
Marieanne Spacey said after the game "Obviously we're all really disappointed; I thought over the 90 minutes we had the best of it but we lacked the finishing touch and in the end that was our undoing.
"Charlton have spent the last few years building an excellent squad and given the right amount of time I will do the same with this talented group of players. The title race is still very much on but silverware or no silverware this young squad have achieved a great deal this season and I am proud of them."
She continued, "I intend to build on this season's achievements both on and off the pitch. Another season together will allow us to gel further and mature as a group whilst off the pitch I would like commercial success and viability. The future of Fulham Ladies FC is dependent not just on silverware but on becoming financially independent. I am working hard to ensure that our success on the pitch can be reflected in our success as a business."
