When Fulham Football Club historians of the future pen their works, March 2005 is unlikely to be remembered too fondly. Fulham picked up just one point from two games and failed to score. It is, therefore, unsurprising that the Opta Player of the Month is Edwin Van der Sar.
The Dutch goalkeeper was in fine fettle as he attempted to keep his side out of the fermenting Premiership relegation battle, making 10 saves. This total was the third highest in the top-flight for March and is once again an indication of how important Van der Sar is to the Whites. His fourth clean sheet of the campaign, against Charlton, could turn out to be a vital point come May.
Second and third-best Fulham players for March are defenders, Zat Knight and Alain Goma respectively.
Knight made 11 tackles and 18 clearances respectively during the two games and is gradually maturing into a stylish defender. He certainly seems to be learning from his French team-mate Goma.
The former Newcastle stopper has missed vast swathes of the league campaign through injury but Fulham leaked just one goal with him in the side during March. Like Knight, he also made 18 clearances as Fulham battled with Charlton and Manchester United. Goma will hope that he has an injury-free end of season as Fulham battle to retain their Premiership place.
