Player of the Month

Tuesday 8 November 2005

October was an emotional month for everyone associated with Fulham Football Club with the passing of the legendary Johnny Haynes - the Club's greatest ever player - but this sad news didn't deter the Whites from getting some vital results.

The month began with the toughest of challenges, trying to quell Rooney, Ronaldo and Company, as Manchester United visited the Cottage. Chris Coleman's men nevertheless made a good go of it, opening the scoring through Collins John and then equalizing with a precise free-kick from Claus Jensen. In an action packed first half it was Ruud van Nistelrooy, however who decided the game with United's third goal.

One week later at The Valley, Collins managed to pick up where he left off opening the scoring against an in-form Charlton with a clinical finish en route to an important away point.

With the passing of Johnny Haynes only a couple of days before the Liverpool match, the visit of the European Champions was always going to be an emotional affair. Following an immaculately observed minute's silence, however, an excellent performance from the Whites - and especially inspirational captain Luis Boa Morte - saw The Maestro's team emerge as 2-0 victors. Goals from John, his third in as many games, and a beauty from Boa Morte wrapped up the three points.

The Third Round of the Cup loomed three days later and a disappointing exit to West Bromwich Albion. With a strong line-up Fulham played catch-up throughout the encounter with Luis Boa Morte and Heidar Helguson twice dragging the Whites back into the game before eventually being undone by an Inamoto wonder strike.

The last game of October saw an extremely tight affair at the JJB Stadium against Wigan. Fulham dominated the first half and with the game seemingly heading for a 0-0 draw The Whites were undone at the last by a headed winner for Wigan.
