Development Squad player TJ Moncur has been awarded a one-year contract extension with the Club. The former Academy Graduate was loaned out to Bradford City last season and clearly impressed during his spell at Valley Parade, as Reserve Team Manager Billy McKinlay explained.
“I always think the gauge of a player’s progression is the loan situation and who wants to take them on loan. He had a two or three month spell at Bradford and they were raving about him. He thoroughly enjoyed himself there and played the majority of the games.
“I spoke to Stuart McCall and they were very pleased with him and wanted to extend his loan until the end of the season but we wanted to get him back to have a look at him – to make sure he was progressing the way we liked. He’s developed into a decent right back and that loan spell should stand him in good stead for next season."
McKinlay revealed that Moncur's development has seen him switch positions and the youngster's form will now be assessed in pre-season by Roy Hodgson along with McKinlay's other Development Squad prospects.
“His defending has improved over the past 18 months – although it’s still an aspect that he needs to keep working on. He’s been shifted from centre back to right back. He’s got a good physical presence and is very quick. He gets up and down the line well and has real good quality in the final third with his crossing. Going forward he’s nice and positive, he just needs to continue improving on his defensive side and making sure he gets that nailed down because, first and foremost, he’s a defender and is there to defend.
“We’re looking at all the older players in the development squad like Milsom, Moncur, Leijer, Watts, Omozusi and Brown. We need to see what stage that group of players are at pre-season, then the Manager will assess them.”
