Debut Delight

Mladen Petric celebrated his Premier League debut with a two goal salvo and an assist as the Croatian striker played a huge role in our opening day victory over Norwich.

Damien Duff got things going and Alex Kacaniklic and Steve Sidwell also found the net following Petric’s brace.

“I am very happy,” Mladen told after the game. “Not only because of my performance, but because we had an amazing start today which will be very important for us throughout the rest of the season.

“All of us played a very good game; we defended very well – I think they had just one or two chances to score – and we scored five goals which means that we played very well today. I’m happy that we didn’t concede and I’m especially happy for Alex Kacaniklic that he scored his first goal today.

“I’m happy I was able to provide the assist but most important were the three points and that we played a good game altogether as a team. It wasn’t just one or two of us who played well.”

Petric has experienced the atmosphere down by the banks of the Thames before in his career when he was on the defeated Hamburg side in our famous Europa League Semi Final. Upon signing for Fulham he spoke of his admiration for the Fulham Faithful and admitted that he was not disappointed with their performance on Saturday afternoon.

“The fans were great today,” he said. “It was a good feeling to have them on my side this time unlike last time when I was here! I’m looking forward to playing at the Cottage again.”

The five goals scored against Norwich sent the Whites top of the Barclays Premier League but while he was delighted with our start to the new campaign, Mladen emphasised the importance of keeping our feet on the ground.

“It gives us a lot of confidence but I would be happier if we won the next five games one-zero rather than win five-zero and then not win the next week,” he explained. “Manchester United will of course be a big challenge for us and not every game will be like today. But it was an important win and I hope we can keep going like that.”
