Gameiro Goal Defeats Qatar

Monday 5 November 2012 10:34

Fulham’s Corey Gameiro scored the only goal of the game as Australia defeated Qatar 1-0 in their opening match of the AFC U19 Tournament on Sunday.

Gameiro’s Whites teammate Ryan Williams also played 85 minutes of the game, which was played in hot and humid conditions in the United Arab Emirates.

Gameiro broke the deadlock in the 11th minute, calmly lifting a shot over the diving Qatar goalkeeper and inside the far post. He almost doubled Australia’s lead shortly afterwards but saw an effort cannon off the crossbar.

The Socceroos’ second Group D fixture is against Syria on Tuesday. They conclude their group with a clash against Saudi Arabia on Thursday.

The top two teams from each group will progress to the Quarter-Finals.
