Manchester United debutant Robbie Brady set up Shane Long's seventh-minute opener, before volleying in a second 15 minutes later.
Kevin Doyle added a third on 36 minutes, before departing proceedings on the hour mark, with Kelly taking the captain’s armband.
Eid Al Farsi pulled one back for Oman on 72 minutes, but Alex Pearce wrapped up proceedings with Ireland’s fourth.
Meanwhile, Chris Baird and Aaron Hughes both started but Ryan McGivern's late own goal gave Luxembourg an unlikely World Cup draw with Northern Ireland at Windsor Park.
A classy finish from Dean Shiels put Northern Ireland ahead in the Group 6 encounter but Luxembourg grabbed a point when Daniel da Mota's shot deflected off McGivern and flew past Roy Carroll.
Elsewhere, John Arne Riise scored a 90th-minute winner from the penalty spot as Norway defeated Slovenia 2-1 in a Group 5 clash in Oslo.
Brede Hangeland also played the whole game as Norway fought back from 1-0 down to take all three points.
Finally, Mark Schwarzer won cap number 101 but Australia went down to a shock 2-1 defeat to Jordan in Amman.
The result leaves Australia facing an almighty fight for World Cup 2014 qualification.
