Emerson Hyndman and the United States warmed up for the U20 World Cup with a 2-1 win over Australia in Gosford, New South Wales, on Tuesday.
The Fulham midfielder captained the side for the first time and went close to breaking the deadlock with just five minutes played, but his shot from the edge of the box just missed the target.
But it was the hosts who took the lead after quarter of an hour when Stefan Mauk combined with Awer Mabil before converting from close range.
Tommy Thompson almost found an equaliser 10 minutes later but his shot came back off the post, and he was again denied by the woodwork early in the second half when he got a head on Shaq Moore’s cross.
But they soon turned the game around with two goals in the space of a minute courtesy of strikes from Joel Sonora and Maki Tall.
