Tom Cairney came out on top of a closely fought battle with Lucas Piazon to be named Man of the Match against Nottingham Forest.
The pair both netted in a crucial four minute period in the first half to turn the game on its head, but Cairney just about secured more votes than his teammate, claiming 32 per cent compared to Piazon’s 28.4. Neeskens Kebano came third with 10 per cent.
The fact that Cairney’s pass success rate of 88 per cent on Tuesday was actually his second lowest of the season demonstrates just how accurate he is with the ball. He was comfortably the busiest player on the pitch with 102 touches, while he also embarked on two successful dribbles and delivered three key passes.
His sixth goal of the season was expertly dispatched, as he put the finishing touch to a fine team move involving Sone Aluko, Stefan Johansen and Ryan Sessegnon with a deft first time strike that curled away from Vladimir Stojkovic and inside the post.
It was the second time Cairney has won the accolade against Forest, following his earlier goal scoring exploits at the City Ground, and it takes his Man of the Match tally for the season to seven.
