Head Coach Slaviša Jokanović insists all minds are fully focussed on picking up three points when Derby County come to Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon.
“It is very important for us [to make a big statement] as they are in good form,” stated Jokanović. “They are six points ahead of us and this is a great chance for cutting the distance between us tomorrow afternoon.
“On the other side we know we haven’t shown enough good performances and this is a fantastic chance to do everything to beat Derby.
“It is not now a question about our ambition, we are where we are. We must be realistic, we know we are in this moment below the expectation we have created around us.
“We must take it step by step, we must be available to improve and to start with, win the game with confidence on the pitch and being more competitive.
“At the moment I am not thinking about May, but about the next steps we have in front of us and we must be ready.
“I hope it will be three points for us, it’s a great chance in front of our supporters and the Sky cameras, it’s the best moment to change our situation,” said Jokanović.
After two weeks off Championship football a number of players have been away with their national teams which while not ideal for Jokanović, has helped the squad in terms of fitness.
He said: “To be honest we did not have enough players for this international break and we tried to make our job to improve our fitness and to try fix our mistakes with the group of players we had with us.
“Over the last few days my team is complete and we have prepared altogether for this fixture in front of us.
“We created some kind of expectation, and we are clearly at the moment below that expectation.
“We haven’t been solid, strong or competitive enough. We didn’t play enough good football to win more points over this last month.
“At the end for us, what is important is to build our confidence and be a unit, and improve ourselves to play better football and be confident, and to start being more competitive”
The Head Coach also gave an updated account of the Whites injury concerns ahead of the game with Derby County.
“Sheyi Ojo and Lucas Piazon are outside of the squad, Kevin McDonald is suspended and Neeskens Kebano has a question mark, he has some hip problem and we must assess him for tomorrow.
“Ojo will be involved soon, he is working with us but without any physical contact.”
Tom Cairney has spent the international window at Motspur Park and Jokanović,is keen to see his captain return to the heights of last season.
“In general, this is a team sport and we have a few problems in the beginning of the season and we expect we are going to find a better situation with Tom Cairney who is one of our more important players in the past.
“When he is in a great level the people around him play better, but ok it’s not only about one player. We need to improve in both boxes.
“In many games we have dominated, we created the chances but we must find confidence with some good results, and this solution is in our hands and the opportunity is tomorrow afternoon,” said Jokanović.
With only one home victory in the league this season the Fulham Head Coach is eager to implement some away form to make Craven Cottage a fortress, starting this weekend.
“It’s true, last season we probably played better away from home too.
“I try to push my team to mark their territory, to be confident at home but we have not shown that confidence.
“In bad moments we must be a unit and push altogether, I’m sure our supporters will push hard to help us in the game, but altogether we must find a solution for home games like away games too,” he stated.
