Football can work in funny ways.

After being given a taste of the top flight with Manchester United, Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s first prolonged run of football came on loan at Crystal Palace last year.

Now taking in a similar season-long loan spell at Fulham, the Netherlands international defender could make his debut against his former side in the campaign opener at Craven Cottage this weekend.

“I was there for one year so I know most of the players,” Fosu-Mensah told fulhamfctv. “I still have a lot of friends there, I made a lot of friends, but I hope Saturday is going to be good for us.

“[Palace] was good for me. I think it helped me in my development. It was Premier League football so it was always going to be good.

“Roy Hodgson is a good manager. I think he wants his team to be aggressive, he wants the team to dominate the play.”

Fosu-Mensah played a key role for the Eagles last term, playing 24 times as they recovered from a poor start to finish 11th in the Premier League.

And now having swapped South-East for South-West London, the Netherlands international is feeling optimistic ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

“I believe we can do very well,” he said. “We have bought some good players and I have a very good feeling this season that we can finish high.”
