Alfie Mawson has won his first Man of the Match award for Fulham following his imposing display at the back on Saturday.
Operating as the central man in a back-three, the defensive discipline of Mawson and his colleagues ensured Newcastle United went the entire 90 minutes without mustering a shot on target, leading to our first Premier League clean sheet of the campaign.
Salomon Rondon has been in good form for the Magpies and poses such a physical threat, but he was well marshalled by Mawson, limiting the Venezuelan to just one effort on goal in the game.
Throughout the encounter, Mawson won three headers, made one interception and had a season-high 93 per cent pass accuracy, a figure matched only by Tom Cairney. He also battled bravely on after taking an accidental punch to the face from teammate Sergio Rico!
Unsurprisingly considering the result, the back-three were the most popular contenders in the Man of the Match vote. Following Mawson’s 34.2 per cent of the votes was Tim Ream with 17.8 per cent, with Denis Odoi in third on 11.5.
