Denis Odoi’s iconic header against Derby County has finished as Fulham’s 2017/18 Goal of the Season runner-up.
With the Whites trailing in the Play-Off Semi-Finals, Ryan Sessegnon restored parity on aggregate when he lashed home a fine finish two minutes after half-time at Craven Cottage.
The tie was evenly poised but it was Slaviša Jokanović’s side – buoyed by a vociferous home crowd – who pushed on and grabbed a deserved winner through an unlikely source.
We have not been known for our prowess at corners in recent years, but the one taken in front of the Hammersmith End in the 66th minute on Monday 14th May will live forever in the memory of those in attendance.
Sessegnon delivered a perfectly flighted ball towards the edge of the six-yard box, where Odoi had ghosted away from his marker. He then jumped and hung in the air, flicking the ball backwards on the angle.
Time stood still inside Craven Cottage as the ball spun tantalisingly towards goal with the excellent Scott Carson rooted to the spot, eventually dropping in via the far post.
The leap, execution, and direction of the header were all exquisite, and the importance of it created a noise down by the Thames that evoked memories of Juventus and Hamburg in 2010.
With the voting system used this year, Odoi’s goal was worth 5,777 votes, putting him some way clear of Kevin McDonald’s Millwall thump which garnered 4,171.
The winner of Fulham’s 2017/18 Goal of the Season award will be announced on Thursday.
