Aleksandar Mitrović reached the milestone of 25 international goals with a brace for Serbia on Monday night.
They welcomed Lithuania to Belgrade for their European Championship Group B Qualifier, and subsequently claimed their first win of the campaign in comfortable fashion; dispatching their opponents 4-1.
Mitrović opened the scoring with a neat turn and shot on the edge of the box with 20 minutes played, doubling his and Serbia’s tally with a tap-in quarter of an hour later – a goal that represented his 25th for his country.
Real Madrid’s Luka Jovic curled in a stunning third seconds later, although Lithuania did pull one back from the spot after Mitrović was penalised for handball.
The Fulham striker almost claimed his hat-trick late on only to be denied by the woodwork, but Serbia did get a fourth in stoppage time through Adem Ljajić.
The win sees Serbia sit third in Group B, six points off leaders Ukraine but with a game in hand.
Elsewhere, Stefan Johansen came off the bench in the 72nd minute to help Norway to victory in the Faroe Islands.
They were already one up courtesy of Bjørn Johnsen’s effort, and the AZ Alkmaar forward made sure of the points on 83 minutes, leaving Norway fourth in Group F with five points from four matches.
