A Cauley Woodrow penalty and Stephen Humphrys strike earned Fulham a 2-1 PL2 victory over Newcastle United on Monday evening.

A Cauley Woodrow penalty and Stephen Humphrys strike earned Fulham a 2-1 PL2 victory over Newcastle United on Monday evening.

In the first ever game broadcast live on fulhamfctv, Woodrow put his side in front from 12 yards having dusted himself down after drawing a foul from the opposition goalkeeper.

The Magpies restored parity soon after the interval when Sean Longstaff squeezed an effort home, but Humphrys capitalised on a defensive error to secure all three points for his side.

Newcastle had the first decent chance of the game 12 minutes in when Luke Charman played a neat one-two to get in behind the home defence, but Marcus Bettinelli was out swiftly to narrow the angle and repel his shot.

Liam Gibson then drilled a well-hit shot narrowly wide from a good 30 yards, but Fulham made the breakthrough soon after.

A pinpoint Humphrys pass sent Woodrow in behind the visitors’ defence, and after dribbling beyond Freddie Woodman, the goalkeeper clipped his ankles and sent him tumbling, for which he was booked.

Woodrow then made zero mistake from 12 yards, planting an excellent shot into the bottom left-hand corner. Woodman dived the other way, but even if he’d guessed right he probably wouldn’t have reached it.

Brilliant work by Tayo Edun a minute later culminated in another chance for Woodrow, but this time Woodman came out on top when he smothered the striker’s effort.

Fulham were then indebted to Bettinelli as the goalkeeper pulled off two top class saves in the space of three minutes, denying Longstaff as he looked to capitalise on an error, before keeping the Newcastle man out once again when he palmed over his rising drive.

The Whites responded immediately and broke with Dennis Adeniran who beat the offside trap, but his shot was straight at Woodman.

A good run from Charman before the break ended with him squaring to Longstaff who flicked it wide, but the Magpies attacker didn’t have to wait long to open his account as he managed to poke a loose ball in between Bettinelli and the post to make it 1-1 a few minutes into the second period.

With 20 minutes to go Edun stood an inviting cross up to the back post. Woodrow had the beating of his marker in the air, but his header down into the ground bounced kindly into the midriff of Woodman.

It seemed as though either side could end up winning it, and Fulham did just that when Humphrys gratefully seized on a slip in the visiting defence to drive towards goal. He had other options but with the confidence to take the shot on, he smashed an effort on target which had too much power for Woodman.

He was denied a second three minutes later by a good save from the England Under-21 stopper, before Jozabed had a goal ruled out for offside.

Humphrys was left frustrated again in the third minute of stoppage time when his placed strike came back off the far post, but it didn’t matter in the end as Fulham claimed the win that saw them move above their opponents in the PL2 standings.
