A second half resurgence saw Fulham run out 3-1 winners at Villa Park in the first PL2 match of 2018.

Fulham’s Under-23s beat Aston Villa 3-1 at Villa Park on Monday evening. The Whites went a goal down in the first half but there was little to split the sides other than the scoreline.

The second half was a different matter, Fulham scored three in 10 minutes through Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson, Mikolaj Kwietniewski and an own goal from Easeah Suliman.

It was an edgy opening ten minutes but Fulham were looking more dangerous higher up the pitch putting balls into the box.

Villa registered the first shot on target, Harry McKirdy split the defence and raced through the middle in the fourth minute. He forced a diving save from Norman, but he never looked in danger of conceding.

Fulham’s pressure was mounting, Tayo Edun was doing an excellent job of winning possession in midfield and sending the Whites off on counter attacks.

In the 16th minute Edun won another ball in midfield. A quick, long through-ball found Thorsteinsson in the box, the midfielder struck low, but the keeper managed to collect the shot.

Five minutes later it was Villa with a dangerous attack, Rob Atkinson lost possession in his own box and Edun was called into action making a fantastic block.

Villa made the breakthrough in the 26th minute. Oscar Borg crossed the ball in from the left towards the near post, McKirdy scuffed a header but it fell for Aaron Tshibola who poked it into the back of the net.

The best chance of the half came in the 32nd minute for Fulham. The ball was whipped in from the left found Mattias Kait near the back post. The Estonian took a touch to control the bobbling ball and slammed a shot full power on goal.

At point blank range Viktor Johansson launched himself at the shot, making a fantastic save.

The Villains almost went a second goal up but for some fantastic keeping from Magnus Norman. Corey Blackett-Taylor blasted a shot from 10-yards out but a strong save from the keeper kept the deficit to one.

The second half was a different story for the Whites as they came racing out of the blocks scoring 3 goals in the first ten minutes of the half.

51 minutes, in Thorsteinsson drifted in from the right hand side. He looked to shoot but faked instead, completely selling his defender and opening up some space for himself.

He shot hard and the ball took a deflection, it crept across the line with Johansson going the wrong way.

It took less than two minutes for the ball to be in the back of the net again. A quick counter from the Whites went to Jordan Graham on the left, the winger sent a low cross to Kwietneiwski racing in at the back post and he slotted to take the lead.

In the 55th minute the game was finished off as Kwietniewski raced forward once more into the box. With a couple of stepovers he gave time for Kait to get into the box and put a hard cross over the face of goal.

Suliman tried to turn the ball away, instead put it pas Johansson to make it 3-1.

Villa had a couple of chances through McKirdy, he had an excellent chance to pull one back minutes later.

Norman came out several times to extinguish any danger, Mortiz Jenz and Rob Atkinson were called into action to make crucial blocks and clearances in the final 10 minutes and see out the game.
