Peter Grant's Under-23 side fell to a 3-0 defeat at Craven Cottage against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.

Peter Grant’s Under-23 side fell to a 3-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon.

Fulham started strongly, but two first half goals from Carlos Heredia & Pedro Goncalves put the tie heavily in Wolves favour before Will Randall saw the match off.

It was an open controlled first 10 minutes from the Whites. They looked to get forward down either flank through Marlon Fossey and Steven Sessegnon, both playing wing-back.

In the 11th minute, one of Fossey’s crosses beat the defence and Nicolas Santos-Clase almost got on the end of the ball, but it was a fraction too far forward for him.

Fulham went close in the next play from a corner. The ball was headed down and Rob Atkinson stabbed an effort towards goal, it was deflected a fraction past the post.

Sessegnon was enjoying the left side, two minutes later he turned and was off like a shot, leaving Ming Yang Yang behind him. Sessegnon curled a ball towards Tayo Edun but the ball was cleared.

In the 24th minute, Santos-Clase slipped an excellent ball through for Luca de la Torre to chase onto, the American picked up the ball for a one on one with Harry Burgoyne. The keeper rushed out and made an strong diving save.

It was Wolves, that made the breakthrough in the 28th minute though. They turned the ball over in midfield and raced through on goal. Luca Ashby-Hammond was forced off his line, and the ball was squared to Heredia for a tap in to gain the lead.

Fulham almost hit straight back, an excellent ball forward found Francois, he managed a deft touch to put Harris charging in on goal, his effort was blocked out for a corner.

35 minutes in Fulham were piling on the pressure, de la Torre was bombarding balls into a packed box with Harris, Francois and Santos-Clase waiting in the middle but the orange defence was holding.

Wolves made it 2-0 in stoppage time of the first half. Goncalves cut in from the left and drifted towards goal unchallenged, he fired from outside the box and found the back of the net to put Wolves in full control.

The second was a mirror of the first, the Whites were trying to work their way up field, but with more urgency.

Wolves put the game to bed in the 60th minute, Randall charged into the area and let fly into the bottom left corner, past the diving Ashby-Hammond.

Fulham had a chance to get back into the match four minutes later, de la Torre whipped a teasing ball into the box. Atkinson rose for the header but Burgoyne got to the ball just in time.

de la Torre attempted to chip a ball through to Francois, Burgoyne came off his line to claim the ball. Santos-Clase went for a chip at goal in the dying minutes and just cleared the cross bar, but not by much.

It wasn’t the Whites’ day, balls were going forward but there but no goal came for them at the Cottage.
