Fulham Under-21s' first game of their 2018/19 Checkatrade trophy campaign ended in a 3-0 defeat by Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium.
Aside from a gentle breeze the conditions were good for the match by the time the referee got the game underway.
The Young Whites started on the back foot, as Ricky Holmes rattled the crossbar with a stunning effort from 20 yards out, with only a few minutes on the clock. United’s early effort was a sign of things to come, as the visitors struggled to settle.
The Us enjoyed a huge majority of possession during the opening half an hour, constantly peppering Toni Stahl’s goal, and eventually got the breakthrough in the 31st minute through Sam Smith, who latched onto a deflected shot and guided one past the Fulham keeper.
The Young Whites emerged for the second-half with a more positive mind-set, but suffered a huge setback when Stahl received a straight red for handling outside the area.
The boys in yellow made the most of their man advantage, spraying the ball around the park and proved a constant threat.
In the 57th minute, Ricky Holmes doubled the home side's lead, after Smith drove through the middle and set the winger through on goal with a perfect lay-off.
The game was wrapped up from the penalty spot in the 85th minute - a cool spot kick from Slavi Spasov that arrowed straight into the bottom right corner.
Mark Pembridge’s side will look for a much improved performance when they’re next in Checkatrade action, away at Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday 18th September.
