Fulham Under-23s found themselves on the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller at Middlesbrough’s Rockliffe Park on Friday afternoon.
Moritz Jenz, Cameron Thompson and Jayden Harris were all on target for the Whites, but a late rally from the home side earned them the PL2 points.
Inside the first minute, former Fulham Academy product Djed Spence won a penalty for his new side when he was clipped by Harris as he went to clear the ball.
Luca Ashby-Hammond did terrifically well to get a hand to Ben Liddle’s spot-kick, but it had too much on it and ended up in the top-left corner.
The Whites responded well and were level little less than 10 minutes later. After winning a free-kick following a break down the left, Matt O’Riley curled a shot around the wall that was saved by Zach Hemming, but it spilled into a dangerous position and Jenz was able to put it away for 1-1 despite it behind slightly behind him.
Plenty of joy was arriving down the left, and a wicked cross from Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson was bundled in by Thompson shortly after the half hour mark.
After the break, Thompson could have got his second and Fulham’s third after being slipped in by Harris, only to be denied by a fine Hemming stop.
The boys didn’t have to wait long, though, with Harris and Thompson reversing roles and the former found the corner of the net to give his team what looked like breathing space.
However, things quickly turned. After Fulham squandered possession, a Boro counter attack was finished off by Tyrone O’Neill who squeezed the ball under Ashby-Hammond to reduce the deficit.
A throw-in in their own half then led to the Middlesbrough equaliser as they found some space down the right, with substitute Connor Malley finishing the move off.
The home side were in the ascendency and went on to snatch all three points in the final 10 minutes when they swarmed the Fulham penalty area, outnumbering our defenders, and O’Neill got the final touch on Dan Ward’s shot.
