Aron Davies snatched a point late-on at The Bet 365 Stadium on Monday night to ensure Fulham left with something to show for their efforts.

Davies Salvages Point

Monday 24 September 2018 21:03

Fulham Under-23s snatched a point late-on against Stoke City in the PL2 Division as Aron Davies scored late.

Gabriel Kyeremateng opened the scoring 20 minutes from time before the skipper levelled three minutes from time.

Fulham sat in early on, and allowed Stoke to have the ball in their own half, without any real threat to the back three. Rob Atkinson made a couple of routine clearances from long passes, without troubling the centre half.

Tre Pemberton created the first meaningful opening for the hosts when his volleyed cross evaded everyone in the box. Moritz Jenz shepherded the ball behind.

Stoke grew closer to their opener and a couple of fortunate deflections nearly paid off. Jerome Opoku’s clearance came back into the area and Dan Jarvis couldn’t steer his volley on target.

Fulham had the ball in the net from a counter attack as Jayden Harris tapped in from close range, but Fabio Carvalho was adjudged offside earlier in the move.

Luca Ashby-Hammond was called into action shortly after, he pushed behind Gabriel Kyeremateng’s near-post strike. The stopper got his own back when he sold the striker a dummy and sprayed a long pass to Cody Drameh.

The first attempt at striding into Stoke’s half nearly paid off for Fulham. Cameron Thompson was first to a through ball which Jakob Haugaard has already committed to. The forward skinned the ‘keeper but could only fire wide from a tight angle.

Tyrese Francois tried to bend in a free kick from 25-yards, but the midfielder sent his effort sailing over the bar. A couple of lengthy stoppages took the sting out of any momentum either side could gain, which made for a disjointed first half. So much so, the two sides went in at the break deadlocked.

The second half started the same way the first ended. Stoke were content with keeping the ball in areas which suited the Young Whites.

However, this time, Fulham created the better openings. Tyrese Francois pounced on a clearance and returned it with a volley which deflected behind. From the resulting corner, Harris timed a volley to perfection which Haugaard could only watch wide.

Stoke hit back soon after. Simranjit Thandi nodded a ball across the six-yard box, Opoku got back superbly to deny a certain goal.

Cody Drameh jinked his way to the by-line – only the outstretched leg of Nathan Collins denied Thompson a tap-in.

The hosts took the lead on 70 minutes. Substitute Mark Waddington drove into the area and unleashed a shot off the post. Kyeremateng was on hand to tap home the rebound from close range.

Stoke naturally sat deeper to protect their slender advantage, but Ollie Shenton nearly doubled their lead when he cut inside and bent one over the bar.

Fulham found their equaliser three minutes from time. Sonny Hilton’s drive was turned into the roof of the net by captain Aron Davies to restore parity.

That proved to be the last action of the game as Fulham left the Bet365 stadium with a point to show for their efforts.
