Fulham Play Out Stalemate

Monday 11 March 2019 20:38

Fulham Under-23s played out a goalless draw in Kidderminster against a stubborn West Brom side on Monday night.

Nicolas Santos-Clase missed a penalty shortly before the interval in an open game in The Midlands.

Fulham started like a team that needed to prove something and they responded to that well. Jerome Opoku rose highest from a corner to glance narrowly wide.

Shortly after, Nicolas Santos-Clase was slid in perfectly through on goal but he started the ball too far outside the post, curling wide.

Skipper Opoku was called into action at the other end to make the cleanest of blocks across the greasy turf. The two teams were happy to assess each other in a cagey first half.

Tyrese Francois confidently played the ball out from the back to release Mattias Käit and he released Jayden Harris as the winger was brought down in the box. Santos-Clase stepped up and saw his spot kick saved low by Brad House from 12 yards.

The game had a bite to it all of a sudden as tackles were flying in from both sides. Taylor Gardner-Hickman went into the book for a nasty tackle on Francois.

West Brom came out for the second half with an unrecognisable rhythm. Sam Wilding got in behind to round George Wickens but from a tight angle could only slam into the side-netting.

A precise pass into the channel released Stanley Asomugha and Wickens was forced to bring him down on the corner of the box – picking up only a yellow.  The stopper re-gained his composure and made two smart stops.

He held onto a free-kick which bounced wickedly in front of him. Then, Asomugha again found a shooting opportunity but the young ‘keeper made himself big to smother.

Under-18s regulars Sonny Hilton and Ryan De Havilland were introduced to give a new vibrancy. The pair were involved in a fluid move which ended with a cross being shanked behind.

It was Opoku to the rescue again as The Baggies got in behind down the left. A long leg prevented a tap-in for Rayhaan Tulloch. The latter stages saw an open spectacle. Käit broke away well but a sliding block from Max Melbourne denied him.

A frantic final few minutes resulted in sloppy passes from both side as the intensity and tiredness grew in parallel. The whistle went in an ill-tempered game with the spoils shared.
