Villa Edge Tight Affair

Monday 4 February 2019 21:09

Aston Villa came away with all three points in an entertaining game at Motspur Park on Monday evening.

Harvey Knibbs’ strike just over quarter of an hour from time ensured all three points went back to the Midlands.

Instantaneously, Cameron Thompson tested Matijia Sarkic from range seconds into the game. The stopper getting down well to smother. The keeper was in action again to keep out Jayden Harris. Nicolas Santos-Clase’s cross was met by a flying header which Sarkic was equal to.

Yet again, the keeper was earning his keep. Santos-Clase received a low cross and sent a powerful shot towards the corner but the keeper tipped the ball onto the post.

Fulham were forced to defend for the first time in an increasingly open game. Moritz Jenz and Jerome Opoku combined to divert Knibbs’ shot over the bar and Matt O’Riley nodded the resulting corner off the line.

Steven Sessegnon adjusted his sights and rifled a shot from a poor clearance inches over the bar.

George Wickens showed he was alert with fleet of foot to rush out and clear sub Archer’s through ball after Jordan Cox limped off early on. The sub was heavily involved down the left and Wickens was tested for the first time to push clear his cross.

The best move of the game almost led to Fulham opening the scoring just before the interval. Francois burst through the middle and fed Cody Drameh whose cross was glanced wide by Santos-Clase.

An eerie mist descended on Motspur Park as the teams entered for the second half. Jenz and Opoku showed their physical prowess to get on the end of a couple of corners. The former forcing Sarkic into a save, and the latter narrowly missed the angle of post and bar.

Against the run of play, Villa took the lead with little over quarter of an hour to play. Jake Clarke found some space between Fulham lines to feed Knibbs who poked home from six yards.

The visitors saw out the game well and limited the Young Whites to very few chances in the closing stages. Knibbs tested Wickens again, but the stop was routine. Opoku surged through at the death and was booked for simulation upon contact.

Villa held on to secure a win which puts them firmly in the play-off hunt.
