Jonjo Shelvey's solitary goal was enough to see Newcastle Under-23s come away with all three points at Motspur Park on Friday night.

Toon's Experience Shines Through

Friday 1 March 2019 20:49

Jonjo Shelvey's solitary goal was enough to see Newcastle Under-23s come away with all three points at Motspur Park on Friday night.

The first dangerous opening came in the first five minutes. Matt O’Riley’s curling cross was only half cleared by the Newcastle defence. Tyrese Francois returned the ball onto the foot of the post.

Jerome Opoku’s famous diagonals were stretching the play, and Cody Drameh got in down the right to deliver a teasing cross which evaded Nicolas Santos-Clase.

Tom Allen ventured forward in the first meaningful attack of the game for the visitors. His direct run and shot deflected narrowly wide of George Wickens’ post.

The experienced Jonjo Shelvey took aim from 25 yards and forced Wickens into a smart save. The midfielder had another sight of goal soon after with a looping header that was nodded to safety by O’Riley.

The Magpies grew into the game and Kelland Watts was the latest to force a smart low save from Wickens. From the resulting corner Watts’ header was cleared off the line. He was incensed thinking the ball had crossed the line.

The chess match continued into the break as Fulham’s problem of finishing chances continued to echo through the team.

The second half started with a bright interlude for the visitors but that was quickly quashed by Steven Sessegnon’s vicious effort which swirled agonisingly wide for a certain goal of the season contender.

The visitors’ shrewd experience shone through on the hour as Ryan Barrett stood up an inviting cross for Shelvey to emphatically head home. The provider’s crisp strike then smashed the post as the Young Whites became rattled.

Fulham tired, and Newcastle exploited that as they chased the game. Barrett was free down the right and his cross somehow went through three sets of legs.

However, Newcastle’s jitters appeared. Lewis Cass slammed a clearance at his own player and nearly presented Mattias Käit with a tap-in.

The Toon held on to secure a league double over Fulham in the PL2.
