Fulham Finish On A High

Friday 26 April 2019 20:01

Fulham Under-23s’ final PL2 game of the season saw them go out with a bang courtesy of Luca De La Torre’s finish on Friday night.

The lads had a spring in their step in the opening exchanges as De La Torre broke free down the right. His accurate pullback found Nicolas-Santos-Clase, who laid on for a Matt O’Riley strike which deflected wide.

Norwich settled into a passing rhythm as the Young Whites turned the ball over cheaply in the blustery conditions. That passing was disrupted with a loose pass in the middle. O’Riley found De La Torre this time who forced Billy Johnson into a smart low save.

The frantic game showed no sign of quietening down, as both teams exchanged blows. Carlton Morris found a yard to force an excellent save from Luca Ashby-Hammond.

Morris was the main threat Norwich had going forward, and he toed a first-time effort behind after a low ball from Bilal Kamal.

The combo of De La Torre and O’Riley looked threatening as the former sneaked around the back from a set-play. The American couldn’t keep his shot down.

Jayden Harris was playing centrally in his preferred position, as he raced through on goal. Johnson was there to deny him with an excellent fingertip save. The midfielder was having joy winning the ball high, and he played in Mattias Käit for his first sighting which spun wide.

The opening spell of the second half saw more intense Fulham pressure. O’Riley hit the bar as the lads grew closer. The desired opening came shortly after. Steven Sessegnon’s cross was spilled to the feet of De La Torre, who was tasked with a tap-in.

Norwich had their golden chance to level the game into the final ten minutes. Adam Ideh, who had been quiet, got in down the left and the rebound on his shot fell to sub Pierre Xavier who was closed down expertly by Ashby-Hammond.

Fulham took any flow out of The Canaries’ momentum and killed the game. The closing stages marshalled well by Tyrese Francois at the base of midfield.

Ashby-Hammond aided the cause by commanding his area as Fulham held onto secure a win and move above their opponents in the table.
