Ten Man Stoke Hold On

Saturday 8 December 2018 14:59

The ten men of Stoke held on to secure a draw at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon. The result means two identical score draws have been played out by the sides this season.

Nicolas Santos-Clase opened the scoring early in the second half before Tyrese Campbell prodded home after a mistake.

The first opening of the game was presented to Nathan Collins. Tre Pemberton’s free kick found the centre half from a flick on, but the linesman’s flag spared his blushes as he headed over from five yards.

Chris Kelly was playing on the shoulder of the last man which saw him jump the gun early and flagged for offside in the opening quarter of an hour.

The Young Whites grew into the game with a diagonal route to the left-hand side becoming effective. Kelly’s teasing cross was well dealt with by Collins.

Santos-Clase had his first sight of goal which was deflected narrowly past the post after some neat inter-play between Matt O’Riley and Jayden Harris.

The big central defender, Harry Souttar, was proving to be a handful from set plays. He rose highest above Aron Davies to loop a header over the bar. Harris responded well with a driving run and shot at goal which trickled wide.

O’Riley’s wicked cross caused Daniel Gyollai a real problem in his goalmouth, the ‘keeper nearly beating into his own net. Luckily for him, it nestled on the roof of the net.

Luca De La Torre’s powerful surging run marked his first impact of the game. After burning past three challenged, his dinked cross caused mayhem in the Stoke box before it was scrambled clear.

The winger then had the ball fall to him on the turn from a half clearance, off balance, he struck wide.

Pinball inside the Fulham box two minutes from half time was the first signs of nervousness. Rob Atkinson threw himself in the way of two fierce shots from just inside the box.

The second half started in the best fashion for Fulham. Josh Tymon’s short back pass was seized upon by Santos-Clase, the forward beat the onrushing Gyollai to slot home.

The goal settled Fulham into the game, forcing Stoke to chase the controlled possession.

Dan Jarvis’s teasing cross found the head of Tyrese Campbell which forced George Wickens into his first stop of the game.

Atkinson’s error presented Thibaud Verlinden with a clean run at goal. His cut back was tapped in by Campbell to level the scores. The Potters took confidence from the leveller, Pemberton got carried away and sent a shot out for a throw in.

Jake Dunwoody was handed the first caution of the game as he brought down Tyrese Francois.

Davies’s header looked as though it had done enough for De La Torre to prod home off the cross bar, the linesman’s flag denied Fulham taking the lead for a second time.

Moritz Jenz got on the end of a Davies knock down, which Gyollai claimed comfortably.

Dunwoody stupidly scythed down Harris as he broke down the centre – the referee had no hesitation in brandishing his second yellow card meaning The Potters played the closing stages with ten men.

Harris thought he’d won the game deep in to added time. He was denied by a fabulous save from Gyollai at his near post. However, the ten men held on.
