O'Riley's Penalty Secures First Win

Friday 14 September 2018 21:02

Matt O'Riley's fifth minute penalty earned Fulham Under-23s their first win of the season, downing unbeaten league leaders Wolves 1-0 at Motspur Park on Friday night.

Both teams struggled to get a foothold in the game and the opener came after four minutes. A long ball from Moritz Jenz was handled in the area by Cam John. Matt O’Riley stepped up and confidently slotted it home.

Wolves looked to respond immediately when Niall Ellis was fouled on the edge of the area. Luca Ashby-Hammond did well to make a smart stop and palm it behind for a corner.

With 20 minutes on the clock, Thompson sprung the offside trap and cut inside to fire a shot just wide of Andreas Sondergaard’s left hand post. The Young Whites dominated the opening exchanges and kept the ball well for large parts against a strong Wolves team.

Wolves grew into the game however, and they should have levelled just before half an hour. An Ennis cut-back was met by Elliot Watt, whose first-time effort was blocked superbly by Jerome Opoku. He then crashed the rebound against the crossbar.

A lull in the game led to a couple of rash tackles. Firstly, Watt cynically brought down Jayden Harris in his stride and then Opoku was shown a yellow card for bringing down Austin Samuels.

Dominic Iorfa then had a chance to equalise just before the break, but he lashed his shot over the bar after a cross had come through a crowd of players.

The visitors started the second half brightly as Pedro Goncalves found a pocket of space outside the area, he dragged his shot wide.

Wolves begun to pile on the pressure in their search for an equaliser. A prolonged spell of possession lead to their first opening of the second half. Sadou Diallo’s driven cross was inches away from connecting with Austin Samuels.

The Young Whites defended resolutely in the second half. However, the visitors turned the screw as the game went on. Another superb block, this time from Aron Davies, fell kindly for Diallo who swivelled and rattled the bar.

Subsitute Timmy Abraham then had a good chance four minutes from time. The forward won the ball in the Wolves half and forced a good save from Sondergaard.

The resolute Fulham defence continued to repel Wolves’ attacks admirably – but further waves of attack continued deep into added time.

Another dangerous Watt ball in was inches away from being glanced into the far corner by Alex Molberg.

However, the Young Whites held firm and gained a valuable first three points of the Premier League 2 campaign.
