Ten Men Edge It On Penalties

Thursday 14 March 2019 21:47

Leeds Under-23s dealt a cruel blow to Fulham Under-23s after being beaten on penalties in a manic game on Thursday night.

Ryan Edmondson’s first half penalty was cancelled out by Matt O’Riley’s. Shortly after, Nicolas Santos-Clase gave us a precious lead. Izzy Brown took the game to penalties to put the hosts into the quarter final.

The Young Whites flew out of the traps as Tayo Edun got in down the right. Bryce Hosannah toed his cross behind ahead of the awaiting Santos-Clase.

The experienced first team duo on the left-hand side, Brown and Barry Douglas, were a daunting task for Cody Drameh who was fresh from his England Under-18s call-up. The full back dealt admirably with the pair in the opening stages.

The pair clicked into gear to present the hosts with their first opening. Douglas’ cross was met by first Mateusz Bogusz’s strike, then the long leg of Jerome Opoku.

Jayden Harris and Drameh were relishing their task, and the former looked to whip one into the far corner which had Harrison Male at full stretch.

A slick Fulham moved ended with Mattias Käit seeing his shot charged down and a floated O’Riley free kick was glanced away in the six-yard box.

The hosts took a while to get going and their second sight of goal was ballooned into the car park from the edge of the box by Robbie Gotts. The left-hand side proved fruitful again for Leeds as it led to the breakthrough. Douglas received a flick from Brown and Harris brought him down inside the area.

Edmondson stepped up to drive it powerfully down the middle past George Wickens.

The second half started with a gift to the Young Whites. Male’s control was dubious and Harris pounced to nick the ball away from the stopper. The Leeds number one then hauled down the winger in front of goal to earn a straight red card.

O’Riley stepped up emphatically to level from the spot, making it one penalty per side.

The extra man was paying off for Fulham and Käit got in behind to deliver a cross just out of the reach of O’Riley. The second phase of play gave us the lead. Santos-Clase picked up a stray ball and fired into the near corner past sub ‘keeper Josh Rae.

Käit was playing on the shoulder in his number nine role and nearly got in again but his shot was too central at Rae.

The Young Whites were getting in time and again. The ball was worked to Steven Sessegnon and his cross was met by O’Riley. The substitute stopper palmed his effort up, then juggled the ball to safety. The midfield maestro was not done and he met another Sessegnon cross with a volley. This time it flew over.

The hosts hit back, and they responded through Izzy Brown’s tap in after a sharp ball across from Jordan Stevens to take the game into extra time. O’Riley was presented with a golden chance to win it deep into stoppage time. Through one on one he fired straight as Rae who stood tall.

The game ticked into extra time as Fulham aimed to tire the legs of the hosts. Still the home side held strong as the game wore towards a penalty shootout.

Substitute Sonny Hilton brought some energy to the table and he was proving an engine going forward. He fired a half volley over and carried the ball when needed as legs grew weary.

The shootout saw one penalty missed per side to take it into sudden death and Santos-Clase missed the crucial spot kick to send Leeds through.
