Fulham Under-23s were denied twice by the woodwork as Reading Under-23s scraped home and topped Group G in the PL Cup on Monday night.

Reading Top Group

Monday 3 December 2018 21:01

Fulham Under-23s were denied twice by the woodwork as Reading Under-23s scraped home and topped Group G in the PL Cup on Monday night.

Adrian Popa’s deflected free kick gave the hosts the lead before Conor Lawless doubled the lead two minutes later. Nicolas Santos-Clase’s poke home wasn’t enough to spark a comeback.

The opening 15 minutes started with both teams assessing each other and struggling to settle into a real rhythm of passing. Chris Kelly burst down the left and sent in a cross which grazed the top of Nicolas Santos-Clase’s head, the best opening of the first exchanges.

Luca De La Torre mustered the first shot of the game as he opened a pocket of space and fired straight at Liam Driscoll in the Reading goal. Tyrese Francois picked up a yellow card for halting Tyler Frost’s run down the centre of Fulham’s midfield.

Santos-Clase was presented with a half chance as Matt O’Riley found him on the corner of the box but his strike lacked conviction. The chance was gobbled up by sub goalkeeper Coniah Boyce-Clark.

The young stopper was immediately called into action as De La Torre slid a pass inside the full back for Steven Sessegnon to test the substitute’s reflexes.

O’Riley then curled high and wide over the top as Fulham enjoyed the best spells of the game throughout the first half.

Aron Davies rose highest to connect with O’Riley’s corner but his downward header lacked any real power.

Reading’s first opening came just before the interval. Frost found the ball at pace inside the box which missed the bottom corner by a whisker.

Jordan Holsgrove registered the first attempt after the break as Taye Ashby-Hammond saw the ball fly past his right-hand post.

De La Torre was proving a threat to the Royals’ back line as he picked up another pocket of space and fired inches wide of the post. The game opened up a bit more and Frost tried his luck again, which whistled wide, with Ashby-Hammond worried.

The deadlock was broken in fortuitous circumstances as Popa’s free kick took a wicked deflection off the wall end nestled in the corner. The lead was doubled moments later when Frost found another rebound and squared it for Conor Lawless who had a simple task.

De La Torre was getting closer to his goal as he rattled the post from a pull-back which summed up the fine margins of the tie. Rob Atkinson was then alert at the other end to deny Frost baring down at goal.

The Young Whites could sense it wasn’t to be when Sessegnon’s cross was met by Jayden Harris – the same post rescued Reading again.

The goal that eluded Fulham came five minutes from time. Jaydn Mundle-Smith’s pull back was poked home by Santos-Clase to half the deficit.

Francois thought he had levelled the game late-on and had Boyce-Clark scrambling across his goal. The goalkeeper injuring himself in the process.

The game ended with severe pressure being applied by the Young Whites but to no avail as Reading top Group G for now.
