Fulham Under-23s ran out comfortable winners against Colchester United to make it two wins in as many games in the PL Cup.

Fulham Stroll Past U's

Saturday 10 November 2018 14:59

Fulham Under-23s ran out resounding winners as they beat Colchester United Under-23s 5-0 in the PL Cup at Craven Cottage.

An early goal from Cameron Thompson was added to by Nicolas Santos-Clase, before Matt O’Riley hit a stylish hat-trick. The win gives the Young Whites two wins from two in the competition

The visitors started the game with great confidence, and didn’t look fazed by the calibre of Fulham. Todd Miller was played in down the right but his cut-back was intercepted well by Aron Davies.

Rob Atkinson then skewed his headed clearance out for a corner as the Young Whites struggled to settle. Thompson robbed his man to drive at the heart of The U’s defence but his tame shot was straight at Coulter occupying the sticks.

The Whites did gain their composure and showed their class as Thompson opened the scoring ten minutes in. Chris Kelly did well down the right to pull it back for the nimble forward – he turned his man to fire home from close range.

Moritz Jenz was forced to bring down Eoin McKeown on the edge of the box and Chris Forino met the ball in with a powerful header that sailed wide.

Kelly was proving to be a threat down the right as he danced inside past a couple of challenges and saw his strike deflected behind for a corner.

The lead was doubled just before the half an hour mark. O’Riley’s incisive pass dissected the Colchester back four to allow Rob Atkinson to put a cross on a plate for Santos-Clase.

Thompson looked lively in the channels as he nearly poked one past the onrushing Coulter, but the stopper did well to smother.

Aaron Barnes’ unfortunate slip allowed Jayden Harris to pounce and some good defending from Forino diverted the ball away.

The pressure kept being ramped up on the visitors as O’Riley was getting the ball in dangerous pockets. His clever reverse pass set Thompson racing clear, but Coulter got down smartly to make the save.

The first big chance Colchester could muster was when Oliver Sims got in down the left to lift a cross to Forino at the back. The defender’s header was grasped easily by Luca Ashby-Hammond.

Thompson then skinned his man down the left and his pull back was only half cleared. Santos-Clase took aim and fired narrowly over the bar.

The game was all but put to bed when O’Riley pounced on a rebound to tap home for the third – allowing Fulham to go in cruising at the break.

Jerome Opoku tirelessly worked to win the ball high up the field and played in Atkinson. His ball across missed the incoming Thompson by inches.

O’Riley embarked on a solo run which was halted inches outside the box. He stepped up himself to fire the ball into the bottom corner.

The midfielder was keen to complete a treble as Kelly tricked past Miller to pull it back for the number eight, his shot curled wide.

O’Riley was running the show in the middle as he sent Thompson racing clear with a first-time pass. The forward bent his shot narrowly wide. Seconds later, Santos-Clase was superbly denied by Coulter.

The treble kept eluding the midfielder as he stepped up to send another free kick off the post and behind for a goal kick. The treble was completed with 15 minutes to play as O’Riley dinked a smart chip over Coulter to complete his hat-trick.

Miller came close for the visitors as Ashby-Hammond smothered his chip, but Jenz got around well to prevent the winger tapping home the loose ball.

Fulham began to run away with the game as Elias Frei fired into the side netting as the game opened up.

Ashby-Hammond’s gorgeous kick found Atkinson behind the full back but his cross evaded everyone and went behind for a goal kick as the game entered the dying embers.

The game ended with a sustained spell of Fulham possession to ensure they made it two wins from two in the PL Cup.
