Fulham Secure Qualification

Friday 22 February 2019 16:10

Fulham Under-23s secured qualification into the PL Cup round of 16 by beating Reading 2-0 at Motspur Park on Friday afternoon.

Harvey Elliott opened the scoring and put the second on a plate for Timmy Abraham in a comfortable win

Jayden Harris started strongly as mazed his way through a couple of challenges before being brought down. Matt O’Riley’s teasing free kick was met by Jenz on the stretch resulting in him diverting over.

Elliott was playing off the shoulder of the full back and beat the offside trap to fizz a ball to Nicolas Santos-Clase – the power deceived the Spaniard as it flew over Myles Roberts’ bar.

Steven Sessegnon’s trickery got him in at the by-line and slammed a cross which needed beating away by Roberts.

The one-way traffic told on 20 minutes. O’Riley’s razor sharp through pass cut open the Reading defence allowing Elliott to scoop home the opener.

The Royals’ offside trap was proving ineffective as Mattias Käit burst through again – off-balance he skewed wide.

Elliott’s flair was shining through again as he jinked inside. Roberts forced into action down low again to make a smart save. The resulting corner was nodded over from point blank range by Käit.

Elliott was instrumental in the dominance as he pounced on a loose ball from a lovely Sessegnon cross. The winger was disappointed to see his effort graze the post.

George Wickens enjoyed a quiet first half but needed to be sharp to deny the oncoming Joel Rollinson. Despite this, we took a comfortable looking lead at the break.

A slight hesitation crept into the Young Whites’ game in the second half. Sessegnon’s back pass was short but Wickens did enough to force Adam Liddle wide.

Reading grew into the game and fancied themselves to find a leveller. Substitute Michael Olise found himself free from a cross but too much purchase on the ball meant it flew over.

Käit was fortunate not to divert the ball into his own net as he occupied the hole left by Jerome Opoku. The midfielder’s clearance shanking onto the crossbar.

Elliott turned on the burners again to all but secure the qualification. This time he left his man trailing to square for substitute Timmy Abraham to tap home.

That settled any remaining nerves as Fulham strolled home to secure qualification, along with our visitors, into the round of 16.
