Youthful Fulham Deliver Encouraging Display

Tuesday 1 October 2019 22:19

Main Action:

An encouraging performance from an extremely youthful Fulham Under-21s side ended in a narrow defeat to League One MK Dons in the Leasing.com Trophy.

Luca de la Torre was the first to get a shot away after some good movement from left to right. The winger cutting inside to send a shot harmlessly wide of the post. The boys were much the better side early on as a slick move led to Ben Davis trying to walk the ball into the net until he was crowded out.

The Dons started sluggishly, but their League One pedigree started to shine through as Kieran Agard attacked a teasing cross which flicked wide. Matthew Sorinola was on debut for the hosts after signing from Fulham at 16, and he looked bright as he charged down the right to force Connor McAvoy to stab into his own side-netting.

Brennan Dickensen eyed up a free kick from 20-yards which cleanly struck the post as the League One side grew closer. MK Dons continued to look the likelier as Russell Martin’s pinpoint cross was met by the diving Dylan Asonganyi who headed over.

The second half followed a similar pattern to that of the first. Tyrese Francois lashed over from a good position. The sucker punch came in the move following that. Dickensen’s excellent cross was met by Agard who had crept between McAvoy and Zico Asare as he finished from point-blank range.

Dons manager Paul Tisdale watched on in a long brown trench coat and tweed cap, but it didn’t need an inspector to see his side were on top as Agard forced a smart save from Luca Ashby-Hammond.

Sonny Hilton was fresh into the action and forced a save from Stuart Moore via a deflected shot as another chance to get back into the game went begging. De la Torre looked our sharpest weapon on the break as he burst into the box again to toe a cross wide with Moore sprawling.

The board for added time went up and the speakers had barely announced three minutes added time as de la Torre snuck in free at the back but couldn’t connect with Hilton’s cross.

What That Means:

The narrow win puts the Dons in the box seat to qualify as Wycombe are yet to play, with tonight's opponents on six points. Fulham are third with a superior goal difference to Stevenage.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Sylvester Jasper and Fabio Carvalho started in the squad following their excellent Under-18s form as well as a start for Connor McAvoy.
  • Two of the Fulham back four are still under-18 with another making his debut season in the PL2 side.
