Penalties were needed to edge League Two Stevenage over the line following Timmy Abraham's late leveller in normal time of our Leasing.com Trophy game on Tuesday night.

Abraham's Late Goal Snatches Point

Tuesday 29 October 2019 21:51

Main Action:

The boys started with a purposeful rhythm but took some time to adjust to the physical challenge Stevenage posed. Luca de la Torre raced clear down the left and fired a cross shot across the box that was stabbed away from the lurking Jayden Harris.

The hosts did take 17 minutes to get their first shot in anger away. Michael Timlin struck a lay-off first time which scooped into the empty stand.

A rare flick-on from a direct pass allowed Ben Davis a yard. Delaying his pass meant Fabio Carvalho strayed offside before stroking in an assured finish. Kelland Watts was surprised to see the ball at his feet at the other end as Magnus Norman spilled a corner into his path. A sea of bodies got in his way.

The physical threat had been showing signs of a breakthrough for the hosts and their opener came from a set piece. Charlie Carter powered home a header. The Young Whites were slightly rattled as Dean Parrett found space down the middle and sent a bouncing half volley over the bar.

Matt O’Riley’s introduction changed the game as he dictated proceedings to spray passes left and right. His shot forcing Sacha Bastien into his first save. The other change in Sonny Hilton had a big chance moments later. A quick turnover allowed de la Torre to pull back for the midfielder who fired wide.

More O’Riley vision forced a quick spread from Bastian to prevent de la Torre nicking the ball past him. Carvalho almost put away the best move of the game. One touch passing allowed Cody Drameh to fire in a ball which the confident midfielder looked to pirouette into the corner. Blocked behind.

The game grew old, which suited the youthful Fulham side’s legs. Hilton sprung through the middle running onto a pass firing first time at Bastian. Stevenage were ragged. The boys sensed that as Martell Taylor-Crossdale blazed over and Timmy Abraham almost tapped home with his first touch.

Abraham’s second touch was effective as he nodded home a deflected cross in added time to send the game to penalties. Stevenage scored all four penalties with Hilton and Carvalho missing for the boys. Stevenage take two points.

What That Means:

The boys exit the competition with both MK Dons on six points and Stevenage sitting on five point with only one game remaining for the Young Whites who have one point.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Fabio Carvalho kept his place after an excellent PL2 performance.
  • Matt O’Riley played the second half as he returns from a knee problem.
  • Ibrahima Cisse gained some valuable minutes in his search for match fitness.
