Toon's Second Half Sees Them Through

Friday 3 January 2020 14:13

Main Action:

Despite an excellent string of saves from Taye Ashby-Hammond in the first half, the Under-23s fell to defeat against Newcastle on Friday afternoon.

Ashby-Hammond was called into action with only seconds played as Adam Wilson’s low drive needed saving. Wilson again worked space down the right and cut inside to force another stop at a good height for Ashby-Hammond.

The lads took some time to adjust to the early pressure but some neat combination from Martell Taylor-Crossdale and Terry Ablade resulted in the latter forcing Jake Turner into his first save.

Jack Young was the latest to test Ashby-Hammond as the stopper earned his keep between the sticks in the North East. Following those saves, the Young Whites grew into the game and asserted dominance. Ryan de Havilland set one outside the far post that curled over and Taylor-Crossdale’s dangerous crosses almost found the lurking Timmy Abraham.

Ashby-Hammond ensured his side went in level at the interval with his best save yet. Wilson despaired as the stopper got his fingertips to a stinging drive that was heading into the top corner.

Newcastle looked almost certain to open the scoring seconds into the second half. Two superb blocks from Zico Asare and Jonathon Page on the line prevented that.

An arcing pass from Tayo Edun freed the speed of Ablade whose pullback fell just behind Abraham. There was nothing Ashby-Hammond could do about the opener. Rosaire Longelo’s first time strike found the top corner via the underside of the crossbar.

The hosts found it easier to open the lads up as they chased the game. Yannick Toure found a low cross and fired low into the corner to double the lead. Two minutes later The Magpies found another goal as Victor Fernandez met a ball first-time with a precise finish.

An instant reply looked on the cards as Taylor-Crossdale slid to meet Fabio Carvalho’s cross that spun wide from six-yards in the final action of the game as the boys prepare to face Stoke art Craven Cottage next Friday.

What That Means:

Newcastle move above the Young Whites with the result with only Norwich and Sunderland below them in the table.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Under-18s Jonathon Page and Terry Ablade came into the Under-23s starting XI.
  • Ryan de Havilland started following his absence from the XI.
  • Martell Taylor-Crossdale featured in a different role of the number ten.
