An early onslaught from West Ham Under-23s was enough to see them comfortably home in the opening game of the PL2 season on Friday.

Hammers Take Season Opener

Friday 9 August 2019 20:53

The Main Action:

An early onslaught from West Ham Under-23s was enough to see them comfortably home in the opening game of the PL2 season on Friday.

The first sight on goal took ten minutes to present itself. A training ground routine corner saw Thompson fire into a crowd of traffic. Moments later the hosts found an opener. Dan Kemp found space through the middle and found the far corner.

Another slick move, this time finished off by Alfie Lewis four minutes later. He found the ball ten yards out after a fluid move to bury the ball into the top corner.

The hosts were rampant as Emmanuel Longelo burst down the right to provide a pull back to Oladapo Afolayan but Magnus Norman was down smartly. Nicolas Santos-Clase responded by chopping inside and was halted by an excellent block.

Afolayan was grounded in the box by Ben Tricker and Kemp stepped up looking for his second but his spot kick missed the goal entirely. The lads had a mountain to climb in the second half. Norman was busy making two sprawling saves from dangerous free kicks. The front man Afolayan beat Norman eventually after an error allowed him a simple task.

Martell Taylor-Crossdale had been feeding on scraps but Thompson gave him a chance from an acute angle which was smothered well. West Ham ran the clock down to secure a comfortable win.

What That Means:

The lads go into their home opener against West Brom with a defeat to their name. Newly relegated West Ham start with a comfortable win along with fellow newbies Swansea who defeated Norwich earlier that day to move close to the summit of the league.

Notable talking points:

  • Thompson was back for his first competitive game since a hamstring injury at Colchester last season, featuring in the number ten role. He looked sharp early on linking up with the wide players.

  • Similarly, Jaydn Mundle-Smith featured at left back for the first time in three months following an ankle problem last season and captained the side.

  • Ben Tricker and Taylor-Crossdale lined-up for their league debuts as the left centre half and lone striker respectively.
