Potters Play Smash and Grab

Friday 10 January 2020 20:24

Main Action:

Two second half goals from William Forrester and Scott Hogan were enough for Stoke to claim a two-goal victory in an ill-tempered affair at the Cottage.

Stoke failed to create anything of much note in the first half, however when their chances arrived in the second, they were clinical.

The first could be judged as rather fortunate, but the second from Hogan was more convincing.

Despite this, it was the home side with the first big chance, and it fell to Fabio Carvalho of Fulham, a neat ball was threaded through to him by Martell Taylor-Crossdale, but the finish lacked conviction and was smothered low down to the Stoke keeper’s right.

Around the half hour mark Sylvester Jasper was released down the Fulham left and beat his opponent one on one by cutting inside. After creating the angle for himself he sent a bending shot that looked destined for the bottom right hand corner but Stoke keeper Blondy NNA Noukeu came to their rescue.

It was a story of ‘what ifs’ for the under-23s tonight who lacked that cutting edge you need to be successful at this level.

There was a heated beginning to the second half.

A coming together between full backs Ryan Corrigan and Cody Drameh resulted in some pushing and shoving, the referee deemed a yellow card each the fairest punishment.

This seemed to spark some life into the away side and shortly after they opened the scoring through Forrester.

After a cross from the right-hand side resulted in a bit of pinball in the box, Fulham failed to clear effectively, and the ball was eventually bundled home by the Stoke number five.

Hogan doubled the lead for Stoke after he beat the offside trap cleverly by bending his run and when he got into the box, he showed such great composure by curling the ball beautifully with the outside of his right foot into the bottom left hand corner.

Stoke goalkeeper Noukeu tried to hand Fulham a way back into the game late on when he passed the ball straight to Taylor-Crossdale in the box, however he recovered brilliantly by diving at the feet of the number eight and blocking from close range.

What That Means:

Stoke consolidate their play-off position with a needed win on their behalf. With Norwich picking up a result last week, only Sunderland sit below Fulham in the table.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Kalvin Lumbombo-Kalala started as a wing back under a trialist capacity.
  • The bench consisted of Under-16 players.
  • The game featured seven yellow cards.
