Carvalho At The Double In Excellent Win

Friday 25 October 2019 16:02

Main Action:

The Under-23s romped home to a convincing PL2 win over Sunderland as Fabio Carvalho starred in his first appearance of the season on Friday afternoon.

The boys started as they meant to go on. Dominating the ball in all areas of the pitch. Jayden Harris was the first to test Anthony Patterson with a low drive that was held comfortably.

A corner that wasn’t properly dealt with by the visitors led to the opener. A series of head tennis in the box allowed a loose pass to fall for Ben Davis who strode onto a first-time finish.

The Young Whites were in an intricate mood as Harris swept clear down the right and looked to guide one into the corner which slipped wide on the greasy turf. Young trialist Jayden Sweeney made his mark by bursting down the left to loft a cross for Harris whose purchase was weak.

Fabio Carvalho converted his first goal for the Under-23s marking his first start of the season on the stroke of half time. A deflected off a defender fell into his path as he mazed through to squeeze one in off the post.

Sunderland needed a response from a dry first half and Owen Gamble looked to provide that with a strike from range that had Taye Ashby-Hammond scrambling.

The best chance the Black Cats squandered took 65 minutes to arrive. Lee Connelly beat the offside trap and fired one wide with Ashby-Hammond beaten. A lovely cross bent into the path of the slender Connelly again who should’ve done better with his header.

The maestro of the afternoon Carvalho made him rue his missed chance. Cody Drameh’s perfect through pass set the number ten away to calmly slot home his second of the afternoon.

Luca de la Torre added a glossy finish to the performance as he finished a sweeping counter which involved sub Sonny Hilton and the influential Carvalho.

What That Means:

The win in the early kick-off means we move one place to ninth and three points from the play-off spots. Sunderland stay bottom.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Fabio Carvalho started for the first time this season in the Under-23s following his masterful performances in the Under-18s.
  • The win was the most convincing goal swing in the PL2 since the victory against Norwich at Carrow Road almost a year to the day.
