A spirited second half from the Under-23s saw them come from two goals down to become only the second team to take points from West Ham this season.

Late Goals Salvage Draw For Young Whites

Friday 6 December 2019 21:06

Main Action:

A spirited second half from the Under-23s saw them come from two goals down to become only the second team to take points from West Ham this season.

A first PL2 goal for Jay Stansfield was added to by a Timmy Abraham strike deep into added time to secure a deserved point after Fabio Carvalho’s stunner had halved the deficit at Motspur Park.

The boys deployed an aggressive press hoping to deter the convincing league leaders. Nicolas Santos-Clase forced Joseph Anang into his first stop after a neat Carvalho back-heel. The latter then had a golden chance to open the scoring after receiving a cut-back that was blocked from four yards.

Against the run of play, the visitors took a lead inside quarter of an hour. Bernardo Rosa scampered forward to deliver a cross for Amadou Diallo at the back with a hint of offside.

Joe Powell almost doubled the advantage after a calm period in the game as he leaped to glance a corner wide. Abraham should’ve had the Young Whites level after some excellent wide play from Cody Drameh who stood up a ball that Abraham nodded wide from six-yards.

The boys were caught napping just before half time as Dan Kemp latched onto a long pass and stroked the ball into the corner. Powell almost sealed the game off in style by sending a strike from 25 yards that had wicked curl that hit the back-supporting pole.

Another chance for Abraham in the air from a set play, this time a reflex action, and he sent the ball back to where it came from and wide. The lifeline was provided when Fabio Carvalho sparked a hint of a comeback with a curling thunderbolt that nestled in the top corner.

Stansfield almost had his first PL2 goal within four minutes as he forced Anang into a smart low save to keep the scores level. The leveller looked likely as Ben Davis’ shot popped up off the turf and onto the roof of the net.

The harsh blow knocked the stuffing out of the lads as Powell fired into the roof of the net from a neat move in the build-up.

Defences had struggled to keep Stansfield off the score sheet as he opened his PL2 account in style. His low drive found the corner to set up a grand stand finish.

The final action of the game saw the leveller arrive. Michael Hector made a nuisance of himself in the box and Abraham got his goal with a powerful drive.

What That Means:

The point moves the lads to within three of the play-off places in seventh with West Ham strengthening their cushion to four points over Manchester United.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Every member of the bench had been involved in the hugely successful Under-18s squad this season.
  • Michael Hector started his second PL2 game to keep his match fitness ticking over.
  • Jay Stansfield made his PL2 debut from the bench and marked it with a goal.
