Main Action:

A spirited effort in difficult conditions by the Under-23s ended in defeat to the PL Cup holders Everton on Friday night.

Goals from strike partners Timmy Abraham and Martell Taylor-Crossdale couldn’t halt a formidable Everton side as former Fulham midfielder Dennis Adeniran helped himself to a brace.

The opening exchanges were lively as the top two of Group B in the PL Cup went head-to-head. Connor McAvoy was on hand early to scamper onto the line and prevent Ellis Simms from opening the scoring.

Everton came knocking again and did find a way through. Kyle John’s tempting cross was diverted into his own net by Zico Asare. The goal didn’t deflate the lads as they came back immediately to equalise. Taylor-Crossdale made a nuisance of himself in the box and a loose pass fell to Abraham who confidently restored parity.

Much like the return fixture, Fulham didn’t fear the holders as Fabio Carvalho broke down the left and squared for Abraham who could’ve doubled his tally if a greater connection was made.

A quieter period followed with few real clear-cut chances hindered by the torrential rain as Sylvester Jasper made his mark on the game by skipping inside and sending a deflected shot wide. He then got on the end of a corner that was smothered by Joao Virginia.

The first neat passage by Everton nearly restored their advantage. Adeniran freed John down the left whose cross was cleared as far as Anthony Evans who lashed over.

The warning sign soon turned into immediate danger as the Toffees re-took the lead. Evans squared to Adeniran who made his mark. Evans then tried to give Fulham a mountain to climb as his free kick rattled the post to bring the half to a close.

Adeniran was enjoying himself into the second half as he doubled his tally. He seized on a loose pass and fired into the far corner. The Everton number seven wanted a hat-trick as he tested Luca Ashby-Hammond’s reflexes from range.

As has so often been the case this season, Mark Pembridge and Colin Omogbehin have drilled a belief into their side. Carvalho was felled inside the area giving Taylor-Crossdale the chance to half the deficit. He obliged to set-up a grand-stand finish.

The goal instilled a jitteriness into the hosts as Ryan De Havilland struck the post searching for a leveller. The equaliser evaded the Young Whites as substitute Manasse Mampala settled the game to add a fourth.

What That Means:

Everton move top of Group B with Fulham still in second on six-points. Plymouth are yet to face Watford in the other game.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Timmy Abraham made it two goals from as many PL Cup games following his goal against Plymouth.
  • Martell Taylor-Crossdale scored his first goal since the draw against Swansea in November.
  • Marlon Fossey made his first appearances of the season following another long-term knee injury.
