Watford Shade Sunday Goal Fest

Main Action:

A game full of twists and turns saw the Under-23s concede a lead three times against Watford in our second PL Cup match of the season on Sunday morning.

Watford weren’t going to be an easy task for Fulham as they boasted an impressive record in their Professional Development League - sitting top and it was them who started brightly. The two wingers had freedom down the right which forced Jaydn Mundle-Smith to have his wits about him in the opening exchanges.

A game that lacked any composure sparked into life mid-way through the first half. Fabio Carvalho pinched the ball high and slotted home the opener.

Whilst the Hornets had been threatening, they had little to show for their efforts. That changed when Taye Ashby-Hammond made an excellent reaction stop from a diving header. A few minutes passed and Watford found their leveller. Joseph Hungbo burst through the channel to lift one into the corner.

Jayden Harris almost capitalised on the chunk of additional time as Adam Parkes got down well to hold his instinctive volley.

The second half started at an intense pace as Harris flicked home Luca de la Torre’s cross. A clever corner routine that caught Watford napping. The lead didn’t last long as Kayden Hinds broke the lines to slot home a leveller instantly. Ashby-Hammond then spilt a cross into the path of Hungbo but the stopper atoned for his error superbly by smothering the rebound.

The set-play routines were proving fruitful for the lads as Tayo Edun fired home another from the corner of the box to give the game its fifth goal.

The dogged Watford side kept up their persistence and they were rewarded as substitute Sonny Blu Lo-Everton swept home a first-time finish. Hungbo then drove at the Fulham defence to send an unstoppable drive into the top corner in what proved to be the last goal mouth action of the game.

What That Means:

Watford move top of the group with Everton and Plymouth yet to play in the other game in Matchday 2. That means we move down to second.

Notable Talking Points:

  • Ben Tricker came into the side to start against his former club.
  • Fabio Carvalho netted his third goal in as many Under-23 level matches.
  • Jayden Harris found the net in consecutive matches following his strike against Wycombe on Tuesday.
